I tested Hygglo, the rental marketplace formerly called Fat Llama, to see if renting out your things is worth it. It is legit, but there is no guarantee anyone rents your items. Below is what I found, and which sites I recommend instead.
Legit rental marketplace, but only worth it in a big city
You can earn from things you do not use. No guaranteed rentals, and a 20% service fee.

The short answer
Hygglo is legit. It is a peer-to-peer rental marketplace, formerly called Fat Llama, where you can really earn by renting out your stuff to people in your area.
But there is no guarantee that anyone will rent your items, and Hygglo takes a service fee on every rental. It is only suitable for people who live in large cities in the countries where it is available. In a small town, do not expect to ever earn from it.
- You can potentially earn from your unused items
- No payout threshold
- Paid straight to your bank account
- An Owner Guarantee covers non-return and damage
- App for Android and iOS
- No guaranteed earnings
- Relatively high service fee
- Only available in 10 countries
- Mainly worth it in large cities
My experience with Hygglo
I signed up and looked at how listing and renting out items works on Hygglo, when it was still called Fat Llama. This is what I looked at, and what I did not test.

Is Hygglo legit and safe?
Yes, Hygglo is legit, because you can really earn by renting out your stuff. But that does not necessarily make it worth your time. Here is what you should know.
- No guaranteed earnings
You list your items and hope someone rents them. There is no guarantee you will ever earn. Your chances are highest in large cities, where there are many potential renters.
- A high service fee
Hygglo takes 20% of every rental. It was 25% when it was still Fat Llama. In August 2025, a reader wrote that Fat Llama deducted 40% of the rental value from him. I have not been able to check this myself.
- Your items leave your house
Renters are fully responsible for an item while they have it, and are liable for theft, loss, confiscation or damage. Hygglo’s Owner Guarantee covers non-return and damage up to £25,000 per item in the UK, $30,000 USD in the US and $40,000 CAN in Canada.
- You may have to verify your identity
With your first rental, Hygglo asks for your bank details. If your earnings increase significantly, Stripe can ask you to send a photo of identity documents.
- Only 10 countries
Hygglo only works in the UK, US, Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Canada. If you live somewhere else, this site is not for you.
My takeIn my opinion, Hygglo is a decent site to earn from. However, it is not for everyone. It is only suitable for people who live in large cities in countries where it is available, because they have the highest chance of earning from rentals. But if you live in a small town, then don’t expect to ever earn from it.
Hygglo does not guarantee you will earn. The top sites in your country let you start earning right away.

There is only one way to earn: renting out your own items.
Renting out your itemsYou set the price
After you sign up, you create a listing of an item you want to rent out. It can be anything useful you have lying around, like a camera or a surfboard. You add the name, a clear picture, a category, a detailed description and a price, and hit “Submit”. The item then shows up for renters in your area.
When someone rents your item, you get a notification. The renter pays first, then collects the item from you and returns it when they are done.
You decide the price. Find out the going rate for that kind of item first. Too high discourages renters, and too low means you will not earn a lot.
How much can you make?
There is no guarantee you will earn from Hygglo. But if you get rentals, you can earn a decent amount, even with the high service fee. It also depends on the type of item you rent out: an expensive item brings a higher rental fee.
Overall, I would say its earning potential is relatively decent, but only if you live in a big city, where chances are there will be lots of potential renters.
What makes Hygglo attractive, in my opinion, is that you can earn from something you are not using anymore. That is the true value this site offers.
How you get paid
| Method | Minimum | Fee | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer (through Stripe) | None | 20% service fee per rental | Sent within 24 hours of the rental start date. Usually in your account 3-4 working days after the start date. |
When you get your first rental, Hygglo asks for your bank details. Overall, its payment system is relatively straightforward, and you do not need to hit a threshold to receive your earnings.

“All true, apart the fee Fat Llama deducts. It is in fact 40% of the rental value.”

All true, apart the fee Fat Llama deducts. It is in fact 40% of the rental value. In my eyes it is stealing, especially considering that all available resources suggesting 15%-25%. I’ve found none indicating 40%. Dishonesty at it highest level.
