I tested uTest thoroughly and compared it to the many similar sites I have tested over the years. It is legit and pays decently per project, but it takes time and skill before you earn. Below is what I found, and which sites I recommend next to it.
Legit and good for skilled testers, but slow to start
A software testing site that pays per bug you find. Expect free training courses first and few projects early on.

The short answer
uTest is legit. It is a software testing site that pays you to test software, websites and apps. Most projects pay around $10 to $50 when completed, and payments go out automatically.
But you have to finish a set of unpaid uTest Academy courses before you can start, and there won’t be a lot of projects at first. You are paid for every bug you find, so it takes skill. It has good potential if you stick with it, but it is not an easy way to earn extra cash.
- Has a low payout threshold
- Offers payment via PayPal
- Processes payments automatically
- Available globally
- A free training academy and an app for Android and iOS
- Limited earning opportunities
- Takes a bit of time before you can start earning
- You are paid per bug, so it takes skill
- Readers report that support is hard to reach

Is uTest legit and safe?
Yes, uTest is legit, as you actually can earn as a member. However, that does not necessarily mean it will be worth it for you. Here is what you should know before you join.
- Unpaid training before you earn
You have to finish the uTest Academy courses before you can start testing. There are about 24 of them, and you are not rewarded for completing them. Completing all of them gives you access to more high-paying projects.
- Few projects at first
The availability of projects is something you can’t rely upon. Long-time testers who keep submitting high-quality work get more invitations, so you have to build your reputation first.
- You are paid per bug you find
If you are not meticulous, or not good at identifying bugs and issues, you won’t earn a lot. Miss a project guideline, and your work may not be accepted or you have to redo it.
- Readers report support is hard to reach
uTest has a comprehensive FAQ and a contact form. But some readers say there is no phone or email support, and one reader had a hard time getting reimbursed for money used on a test.
My takeIf you have good testing skills, then I would suggest you join this site. Just don’t expect to earn a lot from it when starting because there won’t be a lot of projects for you to earn from at first. You have to be patient with uTest. But it has good potential if you stick with it.
How you earn on uTest
There are 2 ways to earn. Testing projects are the main one. Tap one to read more.
Testing projectsAround $10–$50 each
First, go through the uTest Academy. It teaches you the ins and outs of earning from uTest. Complete every course before you attempt any testing project: you get access to more high-paying projects and a better chance of being invited.
Then complete your profile, and you start receiving testing project invites. Apply for a project. When you are accepted, you receive all the instructions and guidelines you need to follow.
The most common type is “Functional Testing”. You look for workflow failures, layout and interface mistakes, typos and localization errors, slowness or hanging, and crashes. Always follow the project guidelines, or your work may not be accepted.
Submit your deliverables before the deadline. uTest usually takes a day or two to verify your work. You are paid for every bug or issue you find, and it is credited to your uTest account balance.
Referral programVaries per campaign
You don’t get paid just for inviting people. You get paid for finding people who fit a specific ongoing uTest project.
When your referral passes at least two uTest Academy courses, you get 25% of the referral commission. When your referral submits approved work, you get the remaining 75%. The commission changes per referral campaign, but it is pretty decent money.

How much can you make?
You get paid for every bug or issue you find. So if you aren’t meticulous or good at identifying bugs and issues, you won’t earn a lot. Spotting bugs is a skill that needs to be developed.
Most projects pay around $10 to $50 when completed, which, in my opinion, is a pretty good rate. But you can’t rely on project availability. Long-time uTesters get more invitations, because uTest sees them as trusted testers.
Overall, uTest has good earning potential, but you need to be very patient, because early on you won’t earn a lot. Keep submitting high-quality work to be invited more often.
Payout methods, minimum and dates
| Method | Minimum | When |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | $2 per pay period | Generated on the 15th and the last day of the month |
| Bank transfer | $2 per pay period | Generated on the 15th and the last day of the month |
| Payoneer (not in the US) | $2 per pay period | Generated on the 15th and the last day of the month |
Set up your preferred payment method first. If you have earned at least $2 in a pay period, your earnings are sent automatically. For example, $30 earned on the 11th is included in the pay period of the 15th and arrives a couple of days later. Below $2, uTest waits until you reach it.
I like that the payments are processed automatically, so you can focus on the tests. For more sites with this method, see the top sites that pay via PayPal.
What readers told me
This review has 12 comments since 2023: 6 from readers and 6 replies from me. These are the things readers wrote about.
One reader who also tried other testing sites found most test cycles low paying, had a hard time getting back money spent on a test, and lost money in currency conversion, since uTest pays in USD.
One reader could not reach uTest by phone or email about a payment issue. The contact form on the site and in the app is the official way to reach support.
uTest does not charge you anything to earn. If you were asked to pay, you are probably confusing it with another platform.

uTest has an app, and some projects test mobile apps. Other projects test computer software.

Who tested uTest for this review
If you have any comments, questions, or experiences with uTest, I would love to hear from you in a comment below.
Good to know how all of the people reading these comments actually feel. This way, I can decide whether its worth my time or not.
Glad the articles and comments on my website help you.
There’s no way to reach utest by phone or email. If you call there number on the phone 844 300 -2777, it goes to applause company and no one answers at utest. There’s no way to find any email address on the web or on there website. If you have an issue with payment or any other issue, you cannot talk to them. They send you emails with long surveys to fill out and no mention of the compensation up front like most legitimate companies do so you see if you even want to fill it out. When you go to one of their tests, it’s like a zoo in there, overloaded with people and you could be waiting for hours. This is not a good company to deal with when there are so many legitimate and capable survey companies that you deal with. stay far away is my advice.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and opinion.
Is there any other Websites like utest that pay for testing?
You can see a list of the best user testing sites here.
It is not a scam website but very close to scam.
I have tried many testing websites like utest, testlio, test io.
And I can say that utest is the worst among all.
Most of the Test cycles have very low payouts which is mostly lower than minimum wage in most of the western countries.
There are also some high paying cycles but their you need to use your own payment methods and after that they will reimburse your money.
I really had very hard time to get the money I used for testing.
And if you are not from western countries you will lose your money in currency conversion as they only pays in USD.
Pros: Good for beginners in IT
Cons: mostly everything.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Hi!
I joined this site newly and i m having problem paying it. I am worried if i get my money back or No. I already paid for 5 negativ in one cycle and this is the 6 one.
uTest does not charge you anything to earn, so it sounds like you are confusing it with another platform. Or are you paying because you need to get people to do tests for you? Because this review is focused on the earning side of uTest.
What If I don’t have a computer or laptop…. Can I work with utest using only my android phone?
I explain everything in the review above.
