I tested Outlier AI to see if its AI training jobs are worth applying for. It is legit, but even if you get hired, there is no guarantee you get tasks to earn from regularly. Below is what I found, and which sites I recommend instead.
Legit AI training work, but task availability is inconsistent
Weekly automatic payouts through PayPal, AirTM or bank transfer. A long application process, and no guarantee of regular tasks.

The short answer
Outlier AI is legit. It is a remote work platform with freelance jobs in AI training and data annotation, and these jobs really let you earn extra cash.
But its main drawback is the inconsistent task availability. Even if you get hired, there is no guarantee you will be able to earn from the job regularly. The application process is also long. If you are looking for a stable source of extra cash, you are better off with other sites.
- Offers convenient payout options: PayPal, AirTM or bank transfer
- Processes payments automatically every week
- You can see all available jobs on the website right away
- Inconsistent task availability
- Long registration and application process
- Jobs require you to live in a specific country
- You need a computer to do the work

Is Outlier AI legit and safe?
Yes, Outlier AI is legit, because the opportunities it offers really let you earn extra cash. But just because it is a legit site does not mean it is worth your time. Here is what you should know before you apply.
- Tasks are not guaranteed
Even if you manage to land a job, the tasks assigned to you are not guaranteed. Many members have complained about its inconsistent task availability, so it is not something you can reliably earn from, at least not in all locations.
- A long application process
You sign up, take a skills assessment, and if you pass, you are scheduled for an interview. If you are hired, you go through onboarding and often training. Outlier AI lets you know by email, so check your inbox regularly after applying.
- Training is not always paid
For some job positions, Outlier AI asks you to undergo training. Based on feedback from other users, some job positions do not offer payment during training.
- Jobs are country-specific
Outlier AI is technically available worldwide, but all of the job opportunities require you to be a resident of a specific country. So you will not always find job opportunities.
- Support only after you log in
The FAQ only covers the basics. To reach a representative, you have to log in to the member dashboard and go to the Help section. I wish the contact form could be accessed without logging in.
My takeOutlier AI is not a bad site to look for remote work that involves training AI. However, there are many better options out there for you, in my opinion. I would recommend you join this site if you are looking for AI training or data annotation work, but only if you adjust your expectations accordingly.
How you earn on Outlier AI
There is only one way to earn: AI training jobs that you apply for.
AI training jobsPer hour or per task
When you go to the website, you can immediately see all the available opportunities. That is a good thing, because you know right away if there are job offers for you.
Click a job offer to see the full details, then click “Apply”. If it is your first time applying on Outlier AI, you go through the sign-up process. Then you take a skills assessment, and if you pass, you are scheduled for an interview.
If you are hired, you go through onboarding, and for some positions, training. After that, you wait for tasks to be assigned to you, and you complete them before the deadline to get paid.
Based on my testing, there are a decent number of job offers available at any given time. However, that does not reflect the true earning potential of Outlier AI, because tasks are not guaranteed.

How much can you make?
The amount you can earn mostly depends on your expertise, skills assessment, location, project need and other factors. For example, higher rates may be offered to people with PhDs compared to people who only have a Bachelor’s degree. That is why it is hard to estimate the exact amount you can earn.
Even if you land a job, the tasks assigned to you are not guaranteed, so there is no guarantee you can earn from it regularly. That is why I consider its overall earning potential not that good compared to popular freelance sites.
How you get paid
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| PayPal | Paid weekly and automatically |
| AirTM | Paid weekly and automatically |
| Bank transfer | Paid weekly and automatically, straight to your bank account |
Outlier AI processes payments every week automatically, so you do not have to request a withdrawal. As long as you earned something within the week, your earnings are sent through your chosen payout method. You choose it once you are hired.
It is a relatively convenient and straightforward payout system, in my opinion. I like that it offers direct bank transfer. For more sites with this method, see the top sites that pay via direct bank transfer.
Who can join, and on which device?
Outlier AI is technically available worldwide. But all of the job opportunities require you to be a resident of a specific country, so you will not always find a job you can apply for. You must apply for a job before you can log in to the dashboard.
It is a relatively long process, so it is not the best option if you are in a hurry to earn extra cash.
The website is mobile-friendly, but the work requires a computer. AI training and data annotation tasks cannot be done properly on a mobile phone, so you need to sit in front of a computer to earn.
Outlier AI alternatives I have reviewed
